Biodiesel
IT JUST GETS WORSE!! Chaps who have been making biodiesel from waste chip shop oil for almost three years have been refused the same playing field as others.Another tale of woe from the Irish farce of cleaning the damned place up.
Is the quota system for fuel producing permits anti-competitive under Irish and EU law ?

Free Range or Barn?
Do you really have to ask? I raised both chickens for the table and for egg laying and never did I have a customer question the merits of the free range produce that I supplied.Properly raised and fed birds produce better tasting meat and eggs and no closed-in birds can possible match this. Why? You are what you eat ,do you agree? So how can the diet of a bird raised indoors be complete?
Outside chickens and hens eat worms and earwigs and spiders and grass and weeds and so on and of course they get a ration of grain to boost this. They take dust baths which keeps blood-sucking mites away so they don’t suffer debilitating blood loss. They get vitamins from the sun and minerals from the soil and pick up the tiny stones which the use to grind up their food in their gizzards and the acids in the digestive system remains balanced as they eat when they feel like it and not when forced to.
Inside birds get a “balanced diet” from a bag . No bugs or grass,no sun-bathing,no fun.No taste.
Did you know that the colour of the egg yoke varies in free range birds? Usually it is rich and dark depending on the diet.
Did you know that you can order feed for locked in birds from a colour chart so you can choose the colour of the egg yolk, just like you order paint

What sort of world would we have if these people ever took it over? I doubt if the Islamic courts would have much time for old Environmental hippies and they most definitely would class Ecology as a satanic ritual. From the BBC
“An Afghan journalist has been sentenced to death by a provincial court for distributing “blasphemous” material.
Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh, 23, was arrested in 2007 after downloading material from the internet relating to the role of women in Islamic societies.”Full Story

Geothermal Update
Geothermal power seems to be an under reported source of clean energy but the link below is a good news item. From Washington State down to California there is hot magma near to the surface under the Cascade Mountains but 10-15 years seems to be a long time to wait for it to be harnessed. The Italians first used such power in 1904 .Not all Geothermal sources are hot enough to generate power but many parts of the world have great potential for heating water and thus can play a big part in reducing fossil fuel requirements. What is it like near where you live? Do you have any information to share?Geothermal in the Cascades

A proposal to build a plant for the “anaerobic digestion” to break animal by-products generated by the Irish meat-processing industry into “biogas” which would then be used to create “green” electricity for the national grid is being examined by Bord Pleanala [the Irish Government planning/zoning appeals board]Tallow (fat) from the rendered animal waste would be used to make biodiesel fuel for use in cars etc.
The “antis” include local politicians plus a powerful lobby from the bloodstock industry and farming groups. They claim that
“Trucking huge volumes of waste into Ireland’s most pristine and valuable agricultural environment makes no sense ,could pose a risk to local water supplies , and cause “noxious smells”
Sounds like a reasonable point until you consider that the animal by-products come from farms and that the resident’s of Ireland’s most pristine and valuable agricultural environment are happy enough to profit from farming as long as other people handle the wastes. Some of this waste currently has to be exported for incineration because of a lack of treatment options in Ireland and proposed new incinerators [which are badly needed] are all in or near to heavily populated areas.Of course racehorses are more important than other folks children. This plant which would be located 6 miles from Clonmel, appears to fail the “Green” test in the eyes of local bigwigs and their political lackies.Recycling is for poor people !!

“In the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Adriatic as well, surprisingly the
sea level rise seems to be recently decelerated (Douglas, 1992; Orli} and
Pasari}, 1994). This behaviour may be related to the building of the Assuan
Dam which reduced the Nile discharge, and consequently increased the salinity
of the Mediterranean.” [Ivica Vilibi GEOFIZIKA VOL. 14 1997]
The Med.would dry out because of evaporation and is constantly topped up by an inflow of water from the Atlantic,so how can its level be rising?
According to this Warning on rising Med Sea levels and other sources the level is rising. Is the Med cooling then and evaporation slowing?

Organics
Organic farming is a precarious livelihood at times and using all the resources to hand is one of the keys to success.Come to think of it all farming is under stress right now.The wasteful and pointless killing of male calves is a case in point and to the read this item in The Gurniad today was a surprise as that paper seems to be against everything .The eating of veal has been equated to the the biblical killing of the first-born but it sure makes sense to use young cattle for food and damn it it can taste nice ![]()

Whaling
Despicable as whaling is ,those gobshites from Sea Shepherd need a kick in the arse for acting as they did in boarding the Japanese hunter boat.Life at sea is dangerous enough without thicko landlubbers acting as if they were John Wayne clones. There are unwritten codes and customs on the high seas and the skipper of the Sea Shepard boat should have his ticket taken away.In their own way,the Spanish fishing fleets are just as rapacious as the Japanese and are pillaging the seas around Europe and further afield but when they get into trouble they are not left alone as this link shows Trawler rescue

Wave power
Wave power gets a boost in Ireland this week with a price of €220 per megawatt hour guaranteed and an investment of €26m from the government over the next 3 years.Overdue and not enough considering the vast amount of cash handed out for spurious wind projects.
